CDU Leadership: Merz Re-Elected

Friedrich Merz has been re-elected as leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU)

Merz received 95.33% of the vote at the party's federal conference in Berlin on Monday.

Merz, 66, has led the CDU since 2021. He is a conservative politician who has been critical of the government's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine.

In his victory speech, Merz said that he was "deeply grateful" for the support of the party delegates. He said that the CDU was "the party of the future" and that he was confident that it would win the next federal election in 2025.

Merz's re-election is a sign of the CDU's continued support for his leadership. The CDU is the largest party in the German Bundestag, and it is currently the junior partner in the government coalition led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz of the Social Democratic Party (SPD).

The CDU's leadership election was held against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine. Merz has been a vocal critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and he has called for Germany to provide more military support to Ukraine.

Merz's re-election as CDU leader is a sign that the party is united behind his leadership. The CDU is now positioned to challenge the SPD in the next federal election.
