Djokovic defeats Carlos Alcaraz in the men's tennis singles final
Novak Djokovic has won his first Olympic gold medal by beating Carlos Alcaraz in the men's tennis singles final. The match, which was played on Court Philippe-Chatrier at the Stade Roland-Garros in Paris, went to four sets, with Djokovic winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
This is Djokovic's second Grand Slam title of the year, following his victory at the Australian Open in January. He is now the first man to win all four Grand Slam titles twice in the Open Era.
Alcaraz, who is just 19 years old, was playing in his first Grand Slam final. He gave Djokovic a scare in the second set, but was unable to maintain his level of play in the third and fourth sets.
The win gives Djokovic a total of 21 Grand Slam titles, moving him one ahead of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the all-time standings.
